MY STORY (the very short version)

My name is Laura Patton and I live in East St Paul, Manitoba (just north of Winnipeg) with my husband Dave and our four kids.

I spent 20 years in the electrical industry, have over 15 years of accounting experience, and am an award-winning financial planner, providing me with unique expertise to help contractors be their most profitable.

Many years ago, I realized that most failed contractors, didn't fail because they lacked sales, they just didn't know how to run a profitable business! To help, I wrote a one-day business basics workshop for contractors called The Profitability Programme and it's a ton of fun.

Unfortunately, many STILL don't consider trades an exciting, prosperous career option. Yet, most contractors I know love their jobs, take great pride in the work they do, have oftentimes turned their work into an art form, and many do very well financially! Without them, none of us would have homes to live in, offices to work at, or places to shop!

This book celebrates the amazing contractors we have in Canada; their businesses and the families that support them. I also hope it will encourage more young people to explore the amazing careers possible in trades.

THE PROFIT ABILITY FACEBOOK GROUP

The mobile nature and traditionally long hours of contractors makes it a particularly hard industry for business owners to collaborate and share information. Having a company in this industry is also very different from any other, making it frustratingly difficult to find financial professionals who can help you be successful.

This isolation and lack of understanding requires most people who start businesses in this industry to recreate the wheel each time with varying degrees of success.

To help support contractors in Canada, I have created a Facebook group where business owners can ask each other questions and share information. Additionally, I'll be in there sharing best practices, answering questions and providing profitability tips.

WHAT KIND OF STORIES AM I LOOKING FOR?

My only real criteria is that your business needs to be your primary source of income.

It doesn't matter how big or small your company is, or how long you've been in business. I know a contractor who's only been on his own for two years and accomplished more than many others have in 20!

I have met so many contractors across Canada and no one has the same story! Whether you're a one-person show or have a hundred employees, first generation or fourth, I can't wait to hear your story!

IF SUBMITTING INFORMATION ONLINE ISN'T YOUR THING, HERE ARE THREE OTHER WAYS TO SHARE YOUR STORY WITH ME
